Coventry Carol

about

Merry Christmas 2015! I hope you enjoy this new addition to your Christmas playlist. This beautiful and poignant carol was sung in "Coventry plays" from the 15th century onwards.

This is the third year that Daniel Janke and I have collaborated to record a Christmas song for you. Thanks very much to Daniel for his artistic vision and his engineering skills.

Daniel is playing a 1974 made-in-Canada Hammond organ and upright bass; I sing all the voices.

lyrics

COVENTRY CAROL

Lully lulla thou little tiny child
By by lully lullay
O sisters too, how may we do?
For to preserve this day
This poor youngling for whom we do sing
By by lully lullay

Lully lulla thou little tiny child
By by lully lullay
Herod the king in his raging
Chargèd, he hath this day
His men of might in his own sight
All young children to slay

Lully lulla thou little tiny child
By by lully lullay
Then woe is me, poor child for thee
And ever morn and day
For thy parting nor say nor sing
By by lully lullay

Lully lulla thou little tiny child
By by lully lullay
