about

I wrote this song at about 4 o'clock in the morning after travelling home from Europe. In a severe bout of jet lag that had me awke in the middle of the night, this song started thrumming through my brain. I had already been planning to record a drums/voice duet with Karl Schwonik later in the summer and wanted to write an original to do with him. On the way home from Germany, I watched 12 Years a Slave and was struck by the rhythms of the old Negro spirituals. I thought it would be the kind of feel I would need to emulate in a drum/vocal duet, so that was the original intent.

I showed it to Daniel Janke after I wrote it and he loved it. He immediately started to add harmonies to it and once he did that, I couldn't live without them.

lyrics

CHORUS
Lord, I’m afraid I have lost the path
Can’t find my way no more
I will wander long in this dark valley
And never find heaven’s door

On the day I was born, the sun shone bright
Your path ran straight and clear
I sang your songs and I walked your way
And I felt your footsteps near

I followed it up and I followed it down
I followed it straight and true
I followed it thick and I followed it thin
And I stayed right close to you

Oh, Lord, I confess I was led astray
Now my soul is dark and worn
I have searched in vain to find my way
To the path where I was born
